Asaf Avidan is the quintessence of raw emotion. Born in Jerusalem, this extraordinary songwriter shapes a powerful imagination, delicately propelled by a singular, rocky voice.
Sincerity, ruptures and open wounds. Carried by his voice, Asaf Avidan puts sharp words on his deepest anguish, as if to marry them with poetry, instinct and elegance. The Israeli songwriter, who peels back his feelings as he dissects life, explores the neighbouring lands of Janis Joplin, Robert Plant and Jeff Buckley to push introspection to the limit. A hypersensitive man with a big heart, this child of Jerusalem, the son of diplomats, sings about his weaknesses with a transcendent strength.
Behind his intimate lyrics and moving compositions, reflections of a being sculpted by a painful past, Asaf Avidan lives the stage as an outlet, far from the nightmares, the disappointments in love and the illness of the past. The prodigy from the holy city, influenced by the ardour of Bob Dylan and the timeless wisdom of Leonard Cohen, speaks the truth, with a free soul and a peaceful mind.
His albums are a therapy, his concerts an encounter. Asaf Avidan delivers the story of a tormented life, a steep but beautiful journey. And to tell the truth, the audience never comes out completely unscathed because, with an almond tattoo on his shoulder, the artist shakes our hearts.
Marked by a long illness and a painful separation, the man from Tel Aviv released his first self-produced record. With The Mojos, he took his first steps on stage in Israel and quickly made a name for himself in New York.
With the release of The Reckoning, and having just founded his own independent label, Asaf Avidan's popularity quickly exploded. He obtained a gold record, then a platinum record. The reviews were excellent, and the French public discovered him for the first time in Paris, during an intimate concert at the Nouveau Casino in 2009. At the time, only 56 tickets were sold. Six years later, the artist will play to a full house at the Zenith!
It's a turning point in Asaf Avidan's career: the German DJ Wankelmut remixes, on the sly, the track The Reckoning. The track was quickly noticed on the internet and went around the world, becoming a hit in all the trendy clubs. But Asaf Avidan says he has always hated the remix. "I listened to it, and I didn't like it. I asked him if he could take it off YouTube... And fortunately he didn't
